Main Atal Hoon (2024) Review
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a prominent figure in Indian politics, is depicted in Ravi Jadhav's film, Main Atal Hoon. The film serves as a commentary on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is often misunderstood for its commitment to democratic processes. The film features Vajpayee's political career, from his formative years as a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to his rise as an aphorism-spouting Parliamentarian.
The film also explores the conspiracy surrounding the early deaths of two of Vajpayee's mentors, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Vajpayee befriends Advani and has a more interesting relationship with Rajkumari, whom he marries in Lutyen circles. Vajpayee suggests that Rajkumari move in with him to create a sense of family.
The film's Vajpayee is fully formed, with no creases or character-building setbacks. Pankaj Tripathi's imitation of Vajpayee's speaking style and body language is spot-on, but his character has as much weight as an election poster.
Jadhav's film serves as both a diatribe against the Congress party and a nostalgia video for a less strident version of the BJP now led by Narendra Modi. Lawrence Dcunha's cinematography and Jagdish Yere's make-up, hair, and prosthetics effectively make the actors resemble their characters, but the writing and staging that could have added depth to the illusion of similarity are nowhere in sight. Overall, Main Atal Hoon is a powerful portrayal of Vajpayee's life and political career.
