Joram 2023 Movie Review

Joram (2023) Storyline

A desperate man and his infant daughter fleeing a system that wants them crushed at any cost, a cop giving unwilling chase, and a bereaved mother seeking ruthless vengeance collide in a tense survival thriller across a brutal landscape of devastated forests, blind greed, rebellion, and the bloody aftershocks of “development”. Well made film. I Missed the film at the Mumbai Film Festival but good to see it in theatres.

Joram (2023) Review

Devashish Makhija's third collaboration with Manoj Bajpayee, Joram, explores the theme of how development can lead to the death of the common man. Dasru, a tribal villager, flees his village due to the violence and retribution of his naxal organization. He works as a construction worker in Mumbai but is not safe in his village. A chance encounter with a woman from his village leads to another wave of violence, and his wife is killed and branded a terrorist by the media.

As Dasru returns to Jharkhand with his infant daughter, he finds that he is not safe there either. Inspector Ratnakar, a Mumbai police officer, is dispatched to Jharkhand to capture him alive. The film portrays a bleak existence for all characters, with tribals being squeezed out of their land in the name of progress. They are losing their jungles, rivers, and way of life, and no one cares for them.

Politiker Phulo Karma (Smita Tambe) is also on the run for revenge, seeing his fellow policemen behave worse than goons. Ratnakar feels disoriented by the moral corruption around him and doesn't know who he is anymore. Dasru is alive only because he has to look after his daughter, Joram, which keeps him motivated.

Director Makhija uses stark cinematography to convey the unreality of the film, showcasing an India that the police, judiciary, and politics refuse to acknowledge. Manoj Bajpayee delivers a strong performance, making the character his own and using silences to convey his suffering and hopelessness. Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub also delivers a straightforward cop who sees circumstances spiraling outside his control and is unable to stop them.
